we're closing in on a year of get pushed and many folks have been playing for many many months... i am thinking it must be difficult to think up new challenges to offer people and some have noted that they've gotten repeat challenges... so i'm starting this thread to help get some ideas going for push challenges...
so - what is the best challenge you've ever gotten? what is the challenge you might like to have? what do you think is the best challenge you've ever issued?
i've had lots of great challenges and had lots and lots of fun with them... the most memorable ones were alphabet photography and "silence"...
and one day i'm going to end up paired with someone who likes to dabble in processing and i'm going to give them the challenge of taking one photo and processing it in three different ways to produce three different moods...
A forum I 'Admin' recently had a challenge to take a picture using a camera or lens older than yourself (a nice challenge - that helps highlight both the age range of the members - and the way equipment has changed) - the youngest contributor was 14 (and so used digital) - I used a 55 year old Russian pancake lens!
My two favourites have been portraits. One was the glam or high art selfie, and this week a portrait without the person in it. My only frustration with this week is my time has not allowed me to fulfill the challenge as much as I want to. It's just been one of those weeks...but I love the idea of it and think you could really have fun with it.
I gave a challenge to @seahawker to "recreate your favourite scene...from a movie, or from history...something that inspires you" I thought it was a good challenge and she did an amazing job with it.
Oh, I gave one that was same subject "at least" three different ways (I think she did all seven). Sort of along the same lines as the processing but with different shots. Same subject, different moods.
I've participated in get pushed last week for the first time and issued my partner a challenge of doing a b&w. i'm realizing now it may not be the most challenging challenge.. :-)
I would do something from these next time:
- portrait/self-portrait without a face
- high key shot
- low key shot
- photograph hands (yours/others)
- photograph feet (yours/others)
- shadow(s)
- street photography
- creative shot using something from the kitchen(bathroom/bedroom)
- something random like 'green and spiky', 'yellow outfit', 'blue dripping' etc.
- take a picture of black and white that's naturally 100% black&white without converting to it.
- lather/bubbles
- jump shot/levitation
- something that says party/birthday/messy/clean/
- something that shows joy/sad/etc.
- white on white
Whoever my partner is, I'm sure they'll hate me. :-)
These are ALL the challenges I've been given so far (I list them on my profile now so people can see what I've done):
Street Photography, Selfie, minimalism, crown, food, b&w with 14 tonal ranges, texture, high key, architecture without processing, tilt shift, abstract, minimalist with double exposure, product ad, people without portraits, food, story shot, fruit bubbles, planet, 365 1 year completion shot, about me without a selfie, holiday tradition, reflection or panning, city or urban shot, light photography painting, ordinary gadget and make it interesting, minimalism, camera movement, warmth, famous painting, sports action, creative use of white balance, camera movement, fruit or water splash, b&w - look for lines and patterns, candid street shot - life as it happens, low key b&w animal shot, light or star trails, vintage old world feel, looking up, strong emotion, motion blur, abstract, window light, and bokeh shapes.
@ikamera I learned tons through these challenges - I know it has been the challenges that has improved my photography another level which I hope to continue to do.
@myhrhelper Oh good idea! I was keeping a running list on my puter, but I'm often not at that one (like when I responded earlier). Keeping it in profile is brilliant!
These are the challenges I've had to date:
shots inspired by a favourite children's book
self portrait
what would it look like if a fairytale took place inside your house
contrasting colours
a portrait exploring a dark emotion
hands
star trails
animals
long exposure
strong geometric lines and patterns
photograph natural letters
diptych telling a story
movement/panning
intentional camera movement
lots of colour
selective colour
get low - low point of view
multiple exposure
upside down
inspired by a photographer or artist you admire
midnight
recreating old photographs
I've loved being part of this but I do sometimes find it hard to come up with suggestions. Hope the above helps someone a bit.
First of all, thanks for starting this thread @northy .
I think best challenge I've issued was the word "super hero" . My partner was free to interpret however they liked and the outcome was certainly not expected.
I think the best challenge I was give was to show, photographically, the relationship I have with my wheelchair. I'm personally so much more drawn to a photo that says something emotionally or psychologically, rather than it just being "pretty".
That being said, I've been here since 2011 and I'm still mostly on program modes, so any technical challenges (within the limits of my equipment) are greatly appreciated.
@myhrhelper what a great idea to list your challenges, may start to do this myself as it,hopefully, shows how you progress, hope that you don't mind me pinching your idea!
Ok, I have a question. I see there are some uploads out of the date range for this challenge. Is it ok if we upload something that was taken before but edited now? Would it be a valid entry? I've been challenged to take an environmental portrait. I have some previous ones which are great but I cannot recreate them. Can I edit them and enter into this week's challenge?
@ikamera weeeeeeeell... in theory, i'd say "no"... but i'm not sure whether anyone actually checks... and regardless, i once had a challenge that involved digging up an older photo and editing it... how's that for a non-answer? ;p
