Ready for some fun, creativity and perhaps to learn something new? So what is a technique challenge? The host challenger selects a specific “technique” to try. It may be brand new for some, or just a challenge to be creative for others. Techniques may include high/low key, macro, portraits, landscapes, abstracts, the possibilities are endless. It could even be specific techniques in processing. The host will select a technique along with some links and examples. Constructive & kind feedback is encouraged. Feel free to share tips, suggestions or how you were able to get the terrific photo you did. Posting your photo on this thread is encouraged but not required. The challenges will last about 7 days.
To post a photo on this thread:
1) Go to your page that has the photo you would like to post.
2) Find the code located toward the bottom right side of your page. The code is on the right side of the word "share". Copy that code and paste it in this thread.
All photos must be taken within the challenge dates. Enter as many as you would like. Voting will last about 3 days. The winner will host a new challenge (or gets someone else to host it).
This week’s technique challenge is brought to you by @Cromwell I asked him to please help me with this and give me some guidance.
This is what he said
""" I'd love to see people try to mimic a Victorian type vintage photo in a modern day setting.""" Something along those lines appeals to me."""
Challenge starts today, August 19th and lasts until Midnight August 25th. day due Voting will take place August 26-29th with Winner announces on the 30th
Could we get some hints about what to do or where to start. If its a technique challenge, it can't just be hit the old pic button.
I'm thinking when taking the pic, softer focus and low contrast?
Monochrome for sure, but sepia or b&w?
What are some post processing buttons to play with?
@ozziehoffy Techniques may include high/low key, macro, portraits, landscapes, abstracts, the possibilities are endless. It could even be specific techniques in processing.
I asked someone else to help me, since I am not an expert...and they chose the processing technique.
Cheryl, it is good to have a challenge on specific processing. Since this isn't the camera settings challenge but a technique challenge a processing challenge works for this. It seems from watching the video's that you supplied that a wide type of photos styles will work. I think it is up to the photographer to take a photo with a vision of changing it in the prepossessing step to look vintage. Some people may want to do certain camera settings to help as well but for this challenge it is all about the processing. I'm excited to do this since I've never tried some of those processing techniques.
Cassandra I think you are thinking of the camera settings challenges which this is not but could include them.
Cheryl - please don't be afraid to host this challenge. It is good to recruit additional help if you can but just do the best you can and you will be fine. This is an excellent choice.
@cheribug@myhrhelper Ahhh I could be confused between the two... my bad... Cheryl, I wasn't having a dig... just questioning... and it has been answered :) Thanks to you both.
I thought this pier photo may be good for the challenge because it is Victorian but still very popular in the present day. I used sepia and added a border.
i dunno... i think i should have added more texture... but i was kinda going for the faded look... also, not sure about the pink... but i kind of liked how that looked more than a sepia, so that's where i ended up... the nuttiness of the subject is due to the fact that this is a two-fer... it also stands as an entry in the 5+2 weekly theme...
any better? this time i added some texture... since PSE wasn't cooperating for some reason, i actually created the texture layer by shooting a piece of crumpled paper and layering it on top of the image...
@tigerdreamer hey Karen... i tried to do the things suggested in one of the tutorials using PSE... the filters are all there for me, but i must have been doing something wrong because they didn't seem to have any effect on the image... so i tried the crumpled paper suggestion to add texture :)

@k1w1 the scratched look really makes it look old...
Click on the picture for explanation before you come to a conclusion. Lol!
My not-so-crazy edit! :-)
Again all suggestions kindly appreciated
