Thank you to everybody who voted for my photo, I feel incredibly honored to have been chosen by such talented peers!
For this round, I'd like to challenge you to interpret the art of one of the greatest abstract artists of all time (and a personal favorite): Mark Rothko. Although he is most well known for his fields of color, his earlier work was actually very varied.
I was familiar with Rothko's color field paintings but, not his early work so, thank you for sharing about his earlier work. It's very fascinating! I've dabbled in the study of Jungian psychology and the archetypal imagery really appeals to me. I also like the idea of a figure looking as if it is "trapped" in a space. I guess this means Rothko's not too crazy for me!
I look forward to participating! Thanks, Ryan. @sullivar
Oh yay! I actually did a Rothko inspired photo last week for my photography club meeting tonight where I will be judged. I will do another for this challenge! Here's what I did (will not be considered, but inspiration for those doing bw)
@darylo Beautiful, Daryl! I love the way that it's stepped....your photo really captures the horizons and sense of space of Rothko's color fields. Best of luck at your photo club!
@jayzon_bitacura Hey Jayzon, you can use any of Rothko's work as inspiration. I only included a few examples to give people an idea of the different stages of his career, he's definitely painted many, many more than what I linked to!
@denvern8v as far as I know, Rothko didn't venture into photography. That being said, you did an excellent job of interpreting the challenge! Rothko's color fields are all about the emotional response to color and interacting with paintings more as an environment than as an object. I think you really captured that!
@sullivar thanks for hosting this challenge. It has introduced me to a form of art I was not familiar with, and a new way of looking. I have really enjoyed the stream of Rothko images.
@kali66 I am too! I'm really impressed with everybody's creativity, there are so many different techniques to try and emulate his work (the majority of which never occurred to me)! I'm going to have my work cut out for me come Wednesday!

I'm not sure if I understand. His art looks more like painting and drawings, but I tried. :)
My attempt! Take off your glasses and squint!
