I would like to see some portraits that have become your favorites due to either a story behind them, technique, or even perhaps a theme that you used. Either way, I'd love to see some photos with a bit of a story, wheither it's a line or a paragraph. Good luck and have fun!
My album might interest you, however the majority of my portraits and stories involve my cat. Who am I kidding? They practically all do. Despite this, I try not to skimp on the quality of my photos or my words.
Try this one out. Definitely one of my favorite stories for sentimental reasons. If you like either the shot or the story, feel free to have a look around.
@underdog123 I shot the below in New Mexico not too long ago - I've never been able to make an edit of it that I really like. I was going to post the original image for my followers today, in fact, and ask them to give it a go.
This man was a worker at a farmer's market - he was helping run the green chili roasting machine. I've never seen anyone working so hard - he had to continuously reach into the gas-fire roaster to pull out stuck chilis, and then he had to bag and lift pounds upon pounds of steaming hot chilis. The line at this roaster stretched all the way across the lot - I'm sure he didn't get a moment's rest until they ran out of chili.
I wish I had been able to do this shot a little more justice.
Nikkers, Jayden Pena, and Shades of Grey, and I met in Seattle. We spent a couple of hours wandering around the Pike Place Market and waterfront taking pictures. It was a fun event for all of us.
"Why is there no mustard in here?!" This one just plain cracks me up! Everytime I see it I laugh out loud.
My favourite shots are of people. EVERY face has a story, it's just a matter of capturing it. I try to catch a glimpse of that personality in any shot I take of someone. In my humble opinion, not enough attention is given to portraits.
My favorite portrait is most definitely this one. This beautiful woman is my daughter and just hours before, she delivered her first child - my first grandchild. I love how peaceful and beautiful she looked after giving birth. I doubt I looked quite as beautiful after giving birth to her 26 years earlier.
Portraits will be my challenge in 2012. I want to learn better technique, but also I want to gain courage to take picture of people I don't know. I admire the art of street photography. It requires a unique talent to capture the purity of the strangers you are taking pictures of. If anyone has advice, I would love to hear it.
My favorite portrait, I have taken recently, is of my middle child Audrey. The technique of this shot may not be my best, but I love it because in this picture she reminds me of me. To understand why that means so much to me you would have to know that I struggled with some postpartum depression after she was born and the saddest part of it for me was that I would stare at her for hours and not "recognize" her as mine. I have gotten past all that, but this picture made me cry when I saw it...because for the first time in a picture of her, I saw myself. Sorry to be so heavy...but you asked for the story behind it! :)
@cohare what a beautiful photo and story. you're well on your way to being able to capture purity if this photo is any indication. i've been working on portraits this year and my best shots have all been of strangers. the series is 'stranger faces' if you search tags. i find spending a little time with them is key, trying to discover what makes them laugh, or what prevents them from laughing, has produced the most profound effects for me. maybe that can be of some help?
This lil girl didnt want to let go of her daddy, he just came home from Afghanistan. So I captured her peeking over his shoulder.
This is a portrait of a Chimp at the HNL Zoo, she had the sweetest eyes, they seemed to tell a story.
And this one was from my first newborn session at the beginning of the month. Her daddy deployed a few days after she was born.
My betel eating friend- Moni village Flores Indonesia She taught me how to dye cotton for weaving ....how to weave...how to dry cassava in the sun as well as how to mix up a betel chewing treat!!
I chose this as my fav portrait this year. its of an old man on the streets of Jakarta who I asked if i could take his photo, and instead of the usual Westerners big grin to camera, he graciously accepted and looked of in the distance, i wonder what he was thinking of me.
I spotted this couple having their wedding photos in Melbourne's famous grafitti-filled Hosier lane last month. I was really enamoured by them because of their TOTAL lack of pretentiousness! They were so relaxed and so in love! :-)

I am fond of this one of mine just because it's my dad and I know what it means to me:

Born the same year the Titanic went down. Imagine the changes you'd see in 99 years!

I like this one because of the focus and how the end product turned out.
