Moon Shots

November 1st, 2010
I've loved the moon as long as I can remember, maybe because my birthday is July 20th. Anyway, I've tried several times to take some shots of the moon and nothing seems to work quite right for me. Any suggestions?

My latest attempt...

What camera are you using ? What lens ? What settings ?

love it

Nice pic... I've tried this a couple of times, and found a fast shutter speed helps me - this was taken at 1/2500... Because it was hand held, it isn't as sharp as it could be and others I've seen on here

Here is one of mine.... It's not the best ever, but it's the best I've ever gotten.
This one is the post-editing shot, but there is a link in the caption to the SOOC shot.
I used a 75-300mm lens on a tripod, and I set it to a 2 second self timer to reduce the shake of me pressing the shutter button. Here's the settings that I used.
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1000)
Aperture: f/5.6
ISO Speed: 400
Focal Length: 300 mm
Then I cropped the photo in Photoshop, used the sharpen more filter and added the outer glow.
Like I said, I know it's not the best, but hopefully it helps get your shots set up for you. I love moon shots, so I look forward to seeing your results

I guess camera info would be helpful. I'm using a Nikon D60, and for that shout I was using a Quantaray 70-300mm lens. This particular picture was taken at f/5.6, exposure 1/10, ISO 100. Focal length was at 300 mm. I tried a longer exposure, but then the moon was too bright to discern any detail. Yes, I was using a tripod

1/160 sec., f 9, ISO 100, 300mm, center weighted metering. My starting point is usually a wider f stop, but the moon was bright !

That's not a bad moon shot at all! :D

@nyweb - that's an incredible shot!!!

Thanks Teresa....a little to bright...should have went with a little faster shutter !

So, it looks like I need to get my shutter speed faster (I already use a remote when on tripod, so no shakes that way) and increase my f-stop. Yes?

@nyweb That is an amazing moon picture, so clear.

I usually go with f 5.6, but a full moon is pretty bright, so I had to stop it down ! My ISO is always 100, focal length is 300mm, and I start the shutter at 1/160 and go from there. Your moon shot up there isn't even a full moon...it shouldn't have been too bright ! Try the settings I gave you and just adjust the shutter speed to brighten or darken !

@cirasj ...I've never even gotten THAT close with my P&S.....nice work !

Thanks Pete! Hopefully I'll have a clear night again soon to try it out.

@cirasj... amazing! Nice shot

I used my P&S to get this through the eyepiece of a 4.5" Newtonian Reflector Scope. Eyepiece was a 25mm Plossi with a 2X Barlow.

This is a great discussion! Nice moon shots & suggestions everyone! I have been playing with "shooting the moon" for a whie! This was the only time I got one not looking like a blob. :)

Wow, nice shots everyone... I love the moon and always try to get pictures,I have only gotten it once so far with my new camera.. I'm gonna try some of the settings suggested.

300mm ~ f/11 (f/6.3) ~ ISO 100 (400) ~ 1/25s (2.0s)

Bring a Tripod and a flashlight. Dress warm!

I brought my SLIK 512QF tripod that wasn't really great against the blistering winds. I used a Canon 450D, and the EF 75-300mm III lens.

This composite is from the eclipse
