moon shots

February 13th, 2014
Every time there is a bright full moon I like to try to capture it. I have used 2 diff lenses, a 18 - 55 and a 55 -250 .
The shots always come out with a real tiny moon.
Any suggestions on how to capture it as I see it. Big and full .

no tips but I'd love to know too :)

No clue! Anytime I've shot the moon I've cropped majorly... I also only have lenses going to 250mm so same boat as you

The longer you zoom (ie 250) the larger the moon will look, relative to the picture. The moon also looks larger right as it is coming up, due to distortion of the light through the atmosphere, so you want to get the timing right. Try to get it in place with other buildings, etc, to give a sense of scale (find out how, using the Photographer's Ephemeris http://www.boostyourphotography.com/2013/04/shoot-moon-with-photographers-ephemeris.html ) and yes, then crop, crop, crop. Tripod is best too for that.

You could try taking the shot from the Dark Side?

To capture it "big and full" you need to provide perspective. The moon truly isn't any bigger when it's full - our mind sees it that way because we typically see it with a foreground object in view that makes it appear huge. For you to capture the moon that way, you must also include that foreground object.

Shot this with 400mm at highest resolution and cropped to suit me.

For camera settings it is good to start with the Sunny 16 rule and adjust from there.

@hollandcrew Wow, your craters turned out great.

Thanks for all the tips.

I only have a 18-55 so this is the best I could do

Both of these moon shots were taken during the day. The first one is just turned to B&W, the second I darkened to make look night. My question is, how do I get a clear picture at night? My camera has a 42x zoom, so I've got range. My issue is, no matter what setting I try, it always looks like a giant glaring ball. I can't get the detail I got on the two day shots. Is there a filter that might take this glare off?

@hollandcrew Wow, that's fabulous.

I just put it on sports setting, I have a 30 x zoom, point it at the moon and hope for the best. I'm just about to post tonight's shot :0)

As you may be able to tell, I'm not a pro, lol

Interesting - I posted a moon shot yesterday and asked those looking at it if they had any suggestions how I could improve it!

@homeschoolmom I had the same glaring ball problem when I first tried taking moon shots. You are probably overexposing the shot. Do you have control of your shutter speed ? If so, I had good luck shooting a large and very bright full moon at around 1/400. Maybe start there and play around up or down a bit.

@mullejf I have not tried adjusting that because my camera is a glorified snap and shoot. However, it will let me adjust that. I'll have to try that as soon as I can see the moon again.

@homeschoolmom I took a break at work tonight to double check the info that I gave you. We have a very bright full moon tonight and clear skies. I shot this at 1/320 shutter speed, F11 and ISO 200. Try something around there and you should get close.

Thanks for all the tips.
Guess I will have to invest in a bigger lens .
Needed to get something bigger then 250 for other projects as well

@mullejf I got a pretty good shot tonight. My camera let me adjust the shutter speed, so I played with it until I got a shot I liked. Thanks for the tip!

@awsadler68 I photographed the moon with a 400mm lens and a 2x extender. Turned out pretty good - I think.
