Hi Stephanie, and welcome to 365. I shoot with a Canon Rebel EOS XSi. All I can say is shoot shoot shoot, and figure out what feels right. I started taking pictures with my camera last summer, and during the week of Christmas I finally took out the manual and locked myself away for two days to study it. I went through the whole manual, operating the buttons on the camera as I went. Did I find new things?? Yes. Did it actually help? Not really. I tend to shoot by feel. Everyone is different, but the more pictures you take, the better feel for it you will get.

The best way to get followers on 365 is to check the Browse category at the top of the page and find pictures that interest you. Check out peoples pictures, and if they interest you, follow them. Make comments, and people will tend to comment back. It's a great way to build your own little community, and you will love it. You're off to a great start.

I purchased the book Canon EOS Rebel XS/1000d last week and highly recommend it if you're new to photography (like me). I am currently learning about aperture, ISO and shutter speed - it's a whole new world for me but I'm confident I'll master them all, given time.

I also received the same camera for Christmas. I bought the book for Dummies and I find it quite helpful.

Hello!

I've also got the 1000d/Rebel XS and am finding it pretty useful.
The most useful things I've found so far is that

This camera does not have spot metering: so if want to correctly expose and image you can switch it into partial metering (which is kinda like a massive spot meter) and zoom in to expose correctly.

Apart from that, slowly moving away from 'Full Auto' to Manual mode is certainly rewarding :D

Check up on the 'Digital Photography School' they have some helpful articles

I have a Rebel.. and honestly the 'auto' settings are pretty darn good, I also like to shoot without the flash in natural light. There's a great book "Understanding Exposure" that I have as well, that will teach ya all about using all your other settings and playing with exposure. Have fun!!
