Photo editing programs for mac?

January 11th, 2011
Hey everyone!
I was wondering if any of you knew of any FREE photo editing programs for mac that are good?
I have iphoto and the one that came with my cannon rebel but they only do a limited amount of things. I know photoshop is the best but it also costs a lot and I don't feel like paying for it.

If you're looking for something with the same sort of capabilities as Photoshop, try Gimp. It's free and open source.

@paulinesmith I use picnik sometimes but I want a program on my computer, Picnik is great except its kinda slow and i don't want to have to upload a picture from my comp everytime I want to edit something in the photo, but I love their effects!
@samanthaC-R I'll have to try it, thanks! I already did the free trial for photoshop, so I can do the aperture one then

Gimp is definitely the best free option, and closest you'll get to Photoshop.

I tried to use GIMP once - it was like swimming in porridge, wearing leggings and a cardigan... I've never come across a less intuitive piece of software!

But that could just be me... Give it a try, and see what you think! :)

I use Aperture ($79) and Pixelmator ($30). Neither are free (obviously), but both are on sale in the Mac App Store and both are amazing programs. For $30, Pixelmator does a lot of what Photoshop does at a fraction of the price. You can also get iPhoto now for $15 on the App store.

Are you a student or have anyone close to you that is a student. The price for Photoshop is much reduced at the student rate. Check out journed.com or academicsuperstore.com. For anyone who takes a lot of pics, I would also suggest Lightroom. (Won't do everything Photoshop does but can do amazing things.) The student price is around $89 or $99, but so worth it!

I'm also using Pixelmator, and I'm trying the trial of Aperture. Sunday I went through the tutorials for Aperture and I really liked it. I also have photoshop through work but am novice with that, but found Aperture pretty easy to use, so may try to buy that while it is 79 at the App Store. I have heard a lot of people talk about Lightroom, but at 299 I'm not ready to invest that yet for my hobby level interest.

Photoshop Express is really good and you can find it on ebay cheap! I found one for $30, normally $100 Don't use the free junk.

...plus Express has all the cool stuff of Photoshop but not as technical.

@jessicacampion - Gimp an option, as is Picnic (available through this site). That being said iPhoto and the Cannon software themselves offer quite a few options - might be worth while exploring what you can do with them to see how far they could go.

Personally, I love GIMP, and if you're switching from Photoshop to GIMP, you can try GIMPshop since a lot of people seem to have difficulty making the switch which might be akin to switching from Mac to Windows and getting frustrated. However, I would recommend using a few tutorials and work through the original layout of GIMP since it's updated more frequently. I originally used Photoshop and GIMP back in 2002 when practically nothing was user-friendly, but I weaned myself off Photoshop because the program wasn't going to be an option after undergrad. GIMP has come a LONG way to being user-friendly, and it's still an incredibly powerful piece of software if you learn how to use it correctly. It offers most of the features you find in Photoshop and some that Photoshop doesn't offer. Highly recommended.
