boken kit... home made

January 17th, 2011
Heya,
*edit* just pointed out by my husband that i typo'd in the title! LOL i didnt even notice..
BOKEH of course ;)

I took this photo this morning to share with someone in my comments...
thought it might be of interest to some others too.

If you have a look at my 365 i've got a few bokeh "pretties" in there... this is how i did it..

(excuse the poor quality, apparently i'd not cleaned the lens after that camera had been in the water!)

it cost me $1.43 :) I bought a black plastic covered project folder (one of those ones with the plastic sleeves) i used a stanley knife to cut the "holder" out then used cardboard to cut the interchangeable shapes... the shapes i used a pair of nail scissors to cut the shapes out except the car that i used a craft hole punch that my sister had.

Anyway this might be old news for some, but thought it was fun DIY to try if you get stuck for ideas of what to take photos of next!

hope its of help to someone!!! :)

Cheers,
Sam

That might be the coolest thing I've never seen before :)
January 17th, 2011
hmmm, I could use my wifes Cricut machine.
January 17th, 2011
@meshinka ha you soo could... that'd be epic, there'd be some awesome cut outs you could do!!
January 17th, 2011
I'm going to try it right now. I will have it cut it out at 52mm and set it between two UV filters.
January 17th, 2011
I will post pics also
January 17th, 2011
Bokeh filters are like ultimate fun. :D
January 17th, 2011
I also think it is a neat idea, and has been used in the film industry for decades. This is a vingette. (Remember the old movies that have the "binoculars look" when they want you to see what the person is looking at through binoculars?) This is pretty much how they did it.

Nice to see that some things remain unspoiled by technology. Well done!
January 17th, 2011
@meshinka sounds great, look forward to pics!
January 17th, 2011
thats the kit i got the inspiration from...
just some creativity with the materials and came up with what i made...
http://photojojo.com/store/awesomeness/bokeh-Kit/
saved myself $23 or so! LOL!
January 17th, 2011
oh wow, thanks for sharing!
January 17th, 2011
Samantha- can you take a picture of what the holder looks like off the camera? It looks as if it's round with tabs- but on how many sides?
January 18th, 2011
This is a great idea - I've always wanted to try it but I really have NO IDEA how this works. Is there anyone who would mind walking this noob through the whole process?
January 18th, 2011
WOULDN'T mind, pardon me.
January 18th, 2011
lens flares are octagon because of the aperature shape... if the shape of the cutout is smaller than the aperature opening, the lens flare will now be the shape of the cutout.
January 18th, 2011
I used SCAL software to cut the shape out on wife's Cricut.

here is my cut out. It fits inside a 52mm uv filter (about 2")

wow thanks for sharing, I've so tried this, but now I have the visuals to go with it, I just might be able to get it to work. thanks heaps.
January 18th, 2011
@meshinka Haven't tried this yet, but curious... you said you put it between 2 filters? Can it go between the lens and one filter? Why 2? And @sam_cr Thanks for this... have always wanted to try it. Looks do-able (if I have the time and patience!) with craft fancy hole punchers. =)
January 18th, 2011
@meshinka Time to dig out my cricut and try this.......
January 18th, 2011
@travelingbabe heya... excuse the web cam photo... no idea where my 1 year old has put the point and shoot!!

(and excuse the mess! and trashy finger nails! haha)... anyway i went with 4 tabs, and they've got little V's cut out to help catch the elastic band around the edges...

hope that helps! lmk if i can take any other piccys for you.

@meshinka LOVE IT!!! what an awesome way to get perfect cut outs!! beats my nail scissors and fiddley cutting any day!!

@proudrhrshipper once the kids are in bed i'll sit down an write it all out for you... i might even make a 2nd as my "holder" doesnt really fit perfectly, i'll "tutorial" photograph as i go if that will help you? :)

January 18th, 2011
LOL Boken.... douchebag i am... BOKEH... typo. :)
January 18th, 2011
THANK YOU SO MUCH! :) :)
was just about to reply to your comment then i saw this!!

Now I need to get my butt around to making it & perfecting the perfect camera setting for it too. I have a rough idea on how to do it (I tested with Christmas lights)

What sort of setting do you put your cam on?? Like aperture wise & all that stuff!

I just got my SLR last month so still new to it all :(
January 18th, 2011
Just tried it but was a disaster. Not sure how I can make it better

@yelyahs13

my settings for the last bokeh photo (the car one)... were

@kirsty1975 that looks pretty, you did better than i did for your first attempt! If you have your camera on manual focus and you make your lights blurry the way it works is the light coming back into the camera is shaped on its way in... so the blurrier you can get it the more of the shape will appear, i use my xmas lights that never got packed away ;) hehe... they work perfectly im usually about 1 - 2 meters from them...

however, LOL im far from an expert at this, so hopefully some of the others on 365 who've bokeh'ed pretties can help shed some more light (excuse the pun) on how to get the perfect shot!! :D

@proudrhrshipper sorry didnt get around to writing everything out, ended up at the cinema kid free WOOOHOOO (first time in yonkies). will try tomorrow.

January 18th, 2011
@sam_cr Looking at all those settings kind of makes my head spin... I don't think my camera (Nikon Coolpix L20) even allows me to set all that. I'd still love to know the process, though - I have the kind of brain that thrives on information like that. :P
January 19th, 2011
@LindaC Linda, I really don't advise placing anything on your lens, not even paper.
January 19th, 2011
todays 365 was another bokeh effect... through a paperweight...
the kits working really well!!
want to try something a bit more intricate in the next few days... like initials or a word etc :)
January 19th, 2011
@proudrhrshipper
Hey Emily,
Kids are in bed and i've got free time before i hit the sack!! :)

Basically the way it works is the light coming back into the camera is shaped on the way in...

So making the "holder" i traced around the lens i wanted it for then cut 4 "stems" off it to help hold it to the lense... i cut a square out of the middle and 2 little slots to hold the cut outs in place.
I set the camera (DSLR, its a canon 7d not that it really matters would work with any SLR... not sure about point and shoots - i should work if you can set the focus to manual...???) set the camera up on whats TV mode on ours and fiddled with the shutter speed and the ISO to get that perfect and had the lens on manual focus...
I attached the "holdeR" to the camera and put the cut out on it...
Its so close to the lens that when you look through your view finder it doesnt pick up on the "holder" at all you see through the center of it with no view obstructed.
I put my object i want in focus at the point i'd like it and then the fairy lights / xmas tree lights about 30cm/1mtr behind that.
I manual focus on the object, which then puts the lights out of focus...
take the photo as the image comes back to the camera the shapes are formed onto the "film"...

if theres no object then you just zoom in or out onto the lights to see what effect you like... you can see the shapes forming in your viewfinder.

hope that kind covers the info you were after?!

will do a tute eventually on how to!!
xx

@meshinka @lynne3804 I just had to google what a cricut was! I have never seen these before, i thought cricket was a sport that Australia is getting thrashed at.
January 19th, 2011
@shelleyframe thats adorable, :) It's a CNC cutter that can be connected to the PC via USB. You are supposed to buy these $50 cartriges with about 40 different shapes on them... but we got SCAL software that allows us to import any .svg file we find or make.
January 20th, 2011
@meshinka I want one of these (totaly off topic)! I am an art teacher and have never seen one of these in Australia, oh the fun I could have!

January 24th, 2011
I couldn't be stuffed making one.... so I bought this
http://www.bokehmasterskit.com/

$25 sounded ok to me, no messing around. It arrived today, will post some shots shortly.
January 24th, 2011
@danielfisher nice, look forward to the piccys!
January 31st, 2011
Very very inventive.
January 31st, 2011
@sam_cr Tried my own version today! With elephants, of course... http://365project.org/elephantgirl/365/2011-01-31
January 31st, 2011
@elephantgirl nicely done!! did you have an elephant hole punch or are you super crafty with scissors/knife?!
January 31st, 2011
@sam_cr thanks for inspiring me! I just cut it with a stanley knife, actually. Not bad for a first attempt but maybe I'll buy a hole punch some day.
January 31st, 2011
@elephantgirl oh wow! well done then!! its pretty fun huh! i could spend hours doing pretty bokehs! :)
