Picnik v. Photoshop

March 4th, 2011
Hello!

Can someone tell me the benefits of using photoshop? I want to try layering, is that something I can do with photoshop? Right now I'm an avid Picnik user, but I'm thinking of investing in PS.

Can someone tell me the benefits of doing so? I'm on a tight budget but if the switch is worth it, I'll consider it.

Thanks so much.

Photoshop is a great program that I use almost exclusively. The MAJOR downfall is cost. Layering is a major benefit in PS! It gives you full control over your image. I haven't worked much with Picnik, but what I've done - I've liked. But I still ended up 'tweaking' the image through PS. If you get it, be prepared to study the program a lot. It can be very overwhelming at times.

Hope this helps you some.

I've never used Photoshop, but if you want to attempt layering you could also look into the photo editing program Gimp, which is free.

I've found Picnik compresses the image too much so you lose image quality, that thats my main reason to use Photoshop, but you have so much more control over the image in PS,...you could have a look at ps elements too

I don't know anything about layering, and have never used Photoshop, but I have Corel Photo Paint, part of the complete Corel Draw suite, which I bought about 10 years ago and still consider the best photo editing package ever. It is on an old PC that I keep as spare but unfortunately will not run on my present Windows 7 machine.

I do however like Picnik (ugraded to the very reasonably priced paid version) which I have only been using for about a month and am very comfortable with it already.

I like picnik for it's ease of use and it has allowed me to edit my photos whilst I'm learning, I've not tried photo shop but I'm using a 30 day free trial of corel paint shop photo pro and coupled with the tutorials on youtube is a lot easier to use than I expected. I still have a lot to learn but I forsee yet another thing I need to save up for!

Ted
I just downloaded the free Gimp and did some layering the first day. There are youtube tutorials as well. I hear Gimpshop gives gimp a "photoshop" look and feel but I haven't tried it.

Free is good.

I have not tried picnik yet. I use CS4 and love it for many reasons. But I started with Photoshop Elements which is more user friendly and a good place to learn. However, you are limited with layers in elements unless you download some actions, you may not be able to use layer masks.

You can do layering with Gimp. Gimp is free. I dream of getting PS but I think I need to learn how to use my camera first. Today I took the first picture I've liked all week.

I have photoshop and picnik premium, I love them both. However you do get a lot more control over your picture with photoshop. There are a lot of free tutorials online. I will say I have been mainly using picnik lately, just because its very easy and less time consuming.
