Alright, what am I doing wrong?

To use reverse macro, you take the lens off and turn it around. Awesome. Simple. Except... then I have to turn it onto manual and I'm lost. All my photos turn out blurry because I can't keep still that long, or they are too dark or way too bright. I think maybe I just don't know how to use my manual settings well enough? I'm pretty confused. Any help would be appreciated.

I've done it loads of times. Are you using a prime lens (fixed focal length, such as a 50mm)?

usually, in manual, you'll need to pop your flash up manually. I'm not familiar with nikon, but there is probably a little button located somewhere around your pop up flash that will pop it up for you. I'd recommend putting your camera in Aperture priority mode maybe (instead of full manual) and starting there since you are not familiar with manual settings. This will allow you to set the Aperture and your camera will choose a shutter speed for you.

Why not spend $10 on an adapter ring so you can focus more on the technical aspects of your setup?
