Help Me Photograph Babies

April 15th, 2011
Well, my brother and his girlfriend had a beautiful baby boy about a month ago. This means that my picture taking has gone to an insane new level. But, because I never really have had the chance to photography babies before, it’s all completely new. I have just been feeling my way through it so far.
Basically, I was wondering if anyone has any tips for me in this situation.

I think taking babies down on their level is the best way. So lie down next to them, or even get pics looking up at them.
I also love taking photos of just small parts of my babies, like tiny hands and feet.

There are time when the flash would annoy the grand daughter, so I still use the flash but hold a piece of white paper to bounce the flash off the ceiling ( where possible) and/or defuse the light so it is not as harsh to her eyes or the picture. Built in flash...haven't made it back to individual camera components yet.

I would avoid the flash altogether.Use camera settings to compensate, I rarely use flash anyway...it can bring a harshness to photos, and in most instances, you really don't need it.

yup i agree - avoid the flash, try for all natural light, babies skin is beautiful in natural light... hands and feet its always nice to have a comparision, so a little hand with a adult finger etc... have fun! newborns are bliss to take photos of - so co-operative!

@emmak hit the biggest one right on the nose. Avoid the all-to-common mistake of looking down at the child for a photo. Get down to their level. Same goes for pets.

A coworker's daughter just started her own maternity/infant photography business, and while most of the shots I've looked at of hers are decent, the recurring theme I've noticed is the angle - she's got backdrops and floor drops, and almost all of the photos have a downward view angle to them. It tends to detract from the photo.

And if you use a flash, make sure to bounce it - and slip on a diffuser if at all possible.

I was also going to say avoid using the flash... I am by no means an expert but I did take some newborn pictures for my daughter's babysitter a few weeks ago. You want to get pictures of the hands and feet for sure! I did a few pictures of the parents holding the feet, the baby holding onto the sister's finger (or parent's finger) Another thing I have seen thats really cute is putting the parents wedding bands on the baby's big toe lol. If you google newborn photography or something like that I am sure you will find lots of great ideas!

At first I was really worried about a flash as well, but it never bothered my daughter. In the first few days her eyes were closed most of the time. Once she was more aware, she never even flinched at the flash.

Thanks everyone!
Besides the flash, does anyone have any idea on how to keep him interested in look at the camera... instead of having him look at everything else?
