How to make a bride comfortable and natural shots?

April 18th, 2011
I am extremely new to photography but I've seem to caught the bug. I have a friend wanting me to do her bridal portraits tomorrow. Location is out in the country since that's where we live (Texas) and I have plenty of it. She's very nervous and I want to know how to make her feel comfortable and not get posed forced shots.

Shooting with a Nikon D80 and still getting comfortable with it off auto-mode.

How should I direct her? What should I say? Because we're friends I think I can get away with a lot. Any suggestions for how to do bridals. I have research a lot and looking at other photos for ideas.

I want very natural and no "cheese" pictures.

Thanks in advance!

I'm a fan of wedding photojournalism... not sure whether your friends are but worth checking out this WPJA site for some ideas... http://www.wpja.com/

Whenever I have someone that's uncomfy with being shot for portraits etc I alway give them the lead for the first ten or fifteen minutes, it lets them get settled with the camera and feeling for being photographed, some of the most natural ones come from that...

After that keep conversation going when you're directing, once there's a natural rhythm between photos, talking and changing poses/moving around things tend to go smoothly.

@andycoleborn did give me some ideas. Sometimes seeing other people's work is very intimidating. Especially since I'm so new

@killerjackalope I will def try to just chat her up. I think I need to make sure that my own nervousness isn't coming through.

Thanks for the advice!
