How to change a photo into a 'rainbow' effect using a Gradient tool in CS5

June 4th, 2011
I would clearly be thrown out of the magical circle if i was a member. I prefer sharing tips & tricks and not making them exclusive. I dont know all of the technical terms, so I am keeping the lingo simple here.
A quick 'tips & tricks on how to turn this:

Into this

Open up CS5
I turned the colour photo of the rose firstly into B&W.
Then on the top menu bar click 'Layer' > 'New' > 'Layer' then the New Layer box will pop up and just click ok.

You should now see on the right hand menu bar that you have two little boxes within the Layers main box: titled Layer 1 & Background.

Keep the little 'layer 1' square box highlighted as this is the layer we are going to work with, but on your screen you will still see your main photo.

Oh the left hand side tool bar, there is a little square above the drip and below the eraser, this is the 'gradient tool'. Click that box and in the top menu a gradient bar will appear with a little down arrow next to it. By using the down arrow you can select which type of gradient you want to use. For the rainbow effect, you will need a 'colour harmonies', select that one and the gradient will appear in that box.

Now moving back to the right hand side menu, there is a sub menu which will prob say 'Normal', change that setting by clicking the arrow and scrolling to 'color'

Now take your cursor and click on one point on your photo and drag it over to another point. Top to bottom, side to side or from the center outwards, etc.. It dont matter which way you use it as long as the levels are what you are looking for.

You will see that the gradient layer now is seen through your photo. On the right hand menu, you can play with the 'fill' and the 'opacity' to get the level and depth of the gradient coming through that you prefer.

Once you have the effect to your requirement click back on the Menu bar at the top 'Layer' > 'flatten image' this will combine the layers, and save the photo as you wish.

Once you know these simple few steps you can have a lot of fun playing with the gradient layers :o)

I processed this in the exact same way:

Have fun :o)

Wow, thank you! I'll try this some time!
June 4th, 2011
@michelleyoung I've been wondering how this was done. Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to explain it. :-)
June 4th, 2011
Michelle, I'd love to try this. What's CS5? Is it something you can download for free or is it a package you have to buy? Sorry but I'm not at all technically minded :o)
June 4th, 2011
@geertje Geertie Have fun with it ;o)

@dulciknit Alison, you are so welcome :o)

@psychographer Lisa, its a photoshop package, and its not cheap either huni.. Its the only one i use, but I am sure there are ways to do the same thing on other packages. Which ones do you use and I will have a look xx
June 4th, 2011
@michelleyoung I only use Picnik (not yet upgraded to the paid package!) I do have gimp but it's really complicated and I don't undestand what I'm doing with it :oS
June 4th, 2011
@psychographer Lisa, this tutorial might help you.. I have never used Gimp, but this looks similar in the process xx

Thanks! I've just turned my dear dairy cow into a rainbow milk machine.(I'll back-post it in the 4th June 2010 slot so you can see it.) :-)
June 4th, 2011
thanks!
June 4th, 2011
Very nice from you to share! Unfortunately I won't try as I gave up using PS years ago and am now using only the photo editing software that goes with my cam but doesn't allow such fancy processing. But it's a nice tutorial :-)
June 4th, 2011
@davidchrtrans Anda fine cow Chloe is as well David :o)

@annaruth Anna you are so welcome :o)

@scatcat Awwww thank you Muse :o)
June 4th, 2011
I'm not sure If CS5 is similar to Photoshop Elements 9 but I'll give this a go over the weekend :-)
June 4th, 2011
@pete21 Peter, I think the process is very alike.. Just found this tutorial as well for elements. http://www.digiretus.com/tippek/cikkiro.php?SORSZAM=192

June 4th, 2011
I don't have CS5 but the fact that you took the time to post this, really impresses me and confirms just how much of a sharing site this is. Really cool of you, Michelle.
June 4th, 2011
@gavincci Jaydee Thank you :o) x

@deens Awww Nadine thank you so much.. I love the community on here :o)
June 4th, 2011
@michelleyoung Thanks Michelle. I will have a look...currently doing a discourse analysis report though so plenty of time will be allocated to that unfortunately :o( xx
June 4th, 2011
@psychographer Good luck with that Lisa, I know its hard work, i remember it all too well.. I am going to be working on my research proposal all afternoon which is due in on Tuesday xx
June 4th, 2011
@michelleyoung I haven't got a tute til next saturday and currently struggling to see the wood for the trees! Did you do Chloe for DSE? I loathed that woman by the time I'd finished :o) xx Good luck with your proposal btw xx
June 4th, 2011
@psychographer Yes I sure had Chloe.. Though my residential project last year was also all done by using Discourse as well.. Look for the themes and base your structure around the themes. Sometimes its easier to print the scripts off, number each line and cut them out and then place the sentances into piles of themes.. xx
June 4th, 2011
@michelleyoung We've actually been given the themes for this one so not quite as much work. Oh well, time to get on I s'pose!! xx
June 4th, 2011
Michelle, you are an absolute star, thank you so much and look forward to trying this soon!
June 4th, 2011

June 4th, 2011
You're so cool, Michelle. Thanks so much for sharing this. :)
June 4th, 2011
Very cool. Works with Elements 9 as well.
June 4th, 2011
@michelleyoung I gave this a try & while it's nowhere near as amazing as yours it's not too bad. Thanks for sharing, hope you don't get chased by the magic circle :)

June 4th, 2011

June 4th, 2011
Michelle so kind to share. It is only with people like you that the others like myself can learn and try new things. Even though I am nowhere near there it is good to read and it is slowly sinking into my brain and who knows one day I will use it.....still figuring out the simple camera, so techno incompetent!
June 5th, 2011
@chantal Chantal, When i started this project I literally knew nothing about photography, and I am still learnign each day. I firmly feel that ideas, hints and tips should be shared to help others learn and grow.
I have had people help me along the way, with camera settings, or just giving me that little hint etc and I have always been so grateful for that help. if it was not for them it would have taken me forever to learn some things.
Whats the point of knowing something if you cannot share that knowledge? to me its just karma, paying forward so to speak. If I can help anyone I will.. Life to me is not cloak and dagger its about paying forward.
Have fun learning and playing :o)
June 5th, 2011
OK. I tried this today. Came all right, but I think I still need some work with it. Thanks for the tutorial.

June 5th, 2011
@webfoot Paul, I really like that.. You have done an amazing job of processing just the keys with the gradient whilst leaving the rest of the photo in B&W. Well done.
June 5th, 2011
Thanks Michelle. FYI and anyone else, this was done with Elements 9 on a Mac.
June 7th, 2011
Very cool. Thanks for all the effort of sharing with us. Will try with Elements 9. Your results examples are lovely.
June 8th, 2011
Hopy moly thanks so much. You make it so simple! :)
June 8th, 2011
@webfoot Excellent Paul :o) Its a great shot.

@reba Reba, you are so welcome

@rachaeleine Rachael, it is once you just know which buttons to click.. try it a couple of times and play with it :o)
June 9th, 2011
I gave it a go and jazzed up my daughters favorite cookies!
June 9th, 2011
@sybil66 Lisa, thats so amazing, well done.. I will come and make a comment on the photo itself :o)
June 9th, 2011
@michelleyoung Thanks! and thanks for posting the discussion - I have an older version of PS but was able to find my way.... I love getting new ideas from folks like you! I hope @webfoot sees it because his piano photo led me to your discussion!
