Selfie question

June 24th, 2011
There has been a lot of talk about selfies here for the last day or so... and I'm curious, how the heck do you get them? I am working SO hard to get selfies, but I can't get the focus right no matter what I do! Am I doing something wrong? My self-timer focuses and then 10 seconds, and then *click* So whatever was in focus when I pushed the timer is what is in focus in the pictures, which is never me, since I am taking the photos.... Does any of that make sense? I want to challenge myself to be in FRONT of the camera sometimes too, but I can't figure out how to take the damn picture! Help! LOL

Check your camera's manual to see if you can turn auto focus off. My D100 has that option. Once I do that I usually use my vacuum cleaner (the tallest, most easily moveable thing in my house) as my stand-in while I set up the shot and focus manually. This method might also work if you can't turn your auto focus off although you'll have to move quickly after pushing the shutter button to move the object out of the shot and position yourself in its place before the self timer goes off.

Even then it's not a perfect process and some days out of ten shots I take like that only one or two might be usable and in focus. Just keep practicing and good luck!

Best way is to have a something in the spot where you will be .. to focus on, use a tripod or at the very lest something solid.. dont want the camera falling off..
When you are happy with the focus set the timer to the longest time , and then move round in front of camera...
If you want a smiling shot.. practice smiling so it dont look forced... if you are getting frustrated it will show or your face.. so at that point have a break and come back to it...
Relax and enjoy yourself, its all about practice.. the great thing about going digital is that for most of us non pros we can take 1000 shots and not waste paper..
dont judge your effects based on some of the selfies you are seeing here.. that will do your head in... aspire to them, but since you are starting out and having a few teething problems,, if you sit there looking at all the wonderful selfies that people have posted you will go crazy....
Good luck.... and have fun

focus on the spot before you shoot, turn your lens in to manual so it doesn't re-focus, get in place and snap! Keeping it on a low aperture helps too as more will be in focus.

I think some great advice as already been said on this thread but if you really wanted to get some amazing selfies you can always buy a wireless remote. The one I have was only like $20. The wireless remote may prove to come in handy in other situations, too!
