Ok so I KNOW you all love some bokeh as much as me. RIGHT??
Well, over at my blog http://www.love-bug-blog.com I've posted a tutorial for creating your own custom shaped bokeh lens hood. (I even noticed there's a thread on here recently about how to do bokeh...I've explained it all on my blog!)
And here's the thing, there's also a photo link up there where you can post your pics on your own blog or even here on 365 and share the link for all to see!
I hope you'll try out this lens hood idea, I've had tons of fun with it!
I hope you'll try it out and link up with me!! I can't wait to see some of my 365 friends awesome bokeh pics on my page!
Here's how to do it:
Click on the link above for the photo show off. Scroll down to the bottom where it says show me your bokeh! and click that Add Your Link button. From there you can link to a pic on your 365, on your blog (hopefully you'll write a blog post about my show off, that would be AWESOME!), or a picture url from facebook or something. It's very easy and I want to get at least 20 photos up there, please! So help me out!
You guys rock. :)
(And feel free to post those custom bokeh shapes here on this thread too!)
That is a very informative link, thanks for sharing! I want to try that some day! :-) However, my largest aperture is F2.0, do you think that would still work?
@shadowdancer heck yeah it will work! Make sure it's on it's 2.0 setting. I've done it with 2.8 before, the hole had to be pretty small, so just remember that. I did a heart on that one. I'd say just keep the shape simple for the best success. Like a heart or a star or something along those lines.
That is so fantastic and very helpful. I love the sailboats. My largest aperture is 4.0, I am going to struggle with that, aren't I? Does the cut out have to be exactly centre? I am itching to have a go!
@emmilou@shadowdancer I made this one with a f3.5 lens because it's what I had. Looking back, I probably should have made it smaller but I didn't really have the time right then.... I would suggest playing around with the size of the cut-out till you are happy. As long as the cut-out is smaller than the aperture, you are good to go.
@emmilou oh and in my experience, the bokeh will be the complete shape if you do have it as close to center as possible. One time I had it too much to the side and the side of my heart was just cut off on the bokeh, so I ended up with a bunch of wonky shaped bokeh on the picture.
@shadesofgrey@amyhughes : Just played a bit (with hearts and stars), and it actually WORKED!! :-) First I thought I cut out too much, but it seems to be okay. May post one of the results tomorrow, but it still looks a little boring as it's already dark here, and I only had some chains of light for Christmas. Will try to find some more colorful light sources tomorrow...
I'v been wanting to try this for so long but all the sites I have been to said it don't work for point and shoots but just gave it a try and it worked somewhat will have experiment some more with it and see if I can get it to work better. :)
@relicsong you may be able to....do you have manual on your camera? that's the most important thing I think is being able to manually focus...but if you don't, you could always try and object way in front so the camera is forced to focus on it and not the background, thus resulting in bokeh in the back. (like david's shot there)
@amyhughes yeah its got manual focus and can do bokeh no problem getting shape bokeh is harder but think its possible as long as you make the shape smaller and don't mind taping anything to your camera as the lens is a lot smaller lol. got a few heart shapes the first few tries but did not have the camera on a tripod and it seems I'v had too much coffee today and its never good to have camera shake when it comes to bokeh but will try more later when I have a chance and if I get a good photo I will post :)
i was waiting patiently for our tree lights to be up to try my hand made star bokeh. i love it too. will try a few more creative ones like yours if i get the chance too. just added it to your blog :)
Not sure if you wanted to limit this to one per customer, but since I've made this custom bokeh project my theme for this week, I'll have this one and 5 more that could, if you want, end up in this thread and on your blog... Lemme know when enough is enough. ;-)
@amyhughes Thanks for the instructions! Been meaning to try this for a while, but definitely benefited from the details given. Still working on my scissor action though - tried angel wings which were an epic fail ;-)
Here's another attempt, this time I tried to focus on one object in the foreground while still having the bokeh stars in the background. I was surprised it worked! :-) Used flash for this.
@amyhughes: Thanks a lot for these instructions, worked great! :-)
My main problem was the tiny size of the cutout. I struggled a bit with getting bokeh at all so eventually put on my lens back to front for a bit of reverse macro. I think it meant that my cutout had to be smaller?...
@bmnorthernlight oooh scissors? You are brave. I always use an exacto knife or a box cutting blade to get that small. I couldn't ever get it to be small enough with scissors
@amyhughes My heart (also cut out with scissors!) is 8mm tall...!
Because I used reverse macro I don't get any readings for aperture size (as the lens isn't really attatched to the body) but it's just the kit lens that came with my camera - EF-S 18-55mm 1:5-5.6
I am just starting out so I think I understand the part of cutting out a shape & covering your lens (i have a Powershot camera without added lenses) but I may still be able to manage that part.
My question is how do you add all those shapes to another picture or multiply it? I would love to learn these techniques!
@myhrhelper This photo i took i had the subject in front of the lights that i used. It was my first shape bokeh so its still not that great! but if you want to add more bokeh, try using a photoshop that has a clone tool. You can do wonderful things with the clone tool! hope this helped :)

It's been a fun learning experience and I want to thank you again for posting this discussion. :-)
