I really wanted to start a thread entitled The "Boob" issue. PLEASE SHOW, but I'll refrain for now. Of course if you want to stick your boob pics in this thread, I'm sure there's plenty of room for them!
But what I actually wanted to know is does anyone know of an online resource on getting started with PS Lightroom or with Gimp, because I have both these programs, but no freakin' clue where to start with either of them! I have a PS book on order from the library but it's taking forever!! I've tried searching Google but haven't yet found a simple dummies guide to getting started with either program, and I think I'm starting to outgrow picnik.com!
I found it helpful to learn specific things through youtube tutorials as I need to see what I'll have to do rather than just read about it or have it explained in words. For example, I chose to learn "selective colouring" and found a very helpful video by just searching for it on youtube. Playing around with filters is also a very easy way to get started. I've not used a single book and gotten farther than I thought I would. That's all the advice I can give you for now :). And sorry: I don't have any boobs in my albums, yet ;).
Photoshop, or PS Lightroom? Two very different beasts.
The best place to get started with Lightroom is probably here, though it depends what you're after. Lightroom is more for image management and processing than editing per se. My tip would be to move your photo library into Lightroom straight away, click on 'Develop' and just start playing around with the sliders and other tools to see what they do. Lightroom is non-destructive so you can always go back to your original settings. Just note that it is intended primarily for raw processing, so you can't get too carried away if you're shooting jpegs. Have fun! :)
For Lightroom, I'd suggest you sign up to Kelbytraining.com or Lynda.com for a month and watch all you can. They have high quality videos that are very thorough. I think it's $29/month, you can sign up for a month or two then quit. Better than any book you'll get.
I usually google for ideas, find out the names of techniques, google for tutorials and go from there. Lately I have been picking up a magazine that is Photoshop based and that has lots of great ideas, maybe you could try that route?
lynda.com is AMAZING! They have a kind of linear course made up of videos that are about 2 minutes long and each one teaches you a new skill - you can master photoshop/gimp in a few hours if you choose, or you can search specific tools and learn how to use them in a couple of minutes. you need an account, not sure if its free or not, but its brilliant!
Google your questions. Or ask knowledgeable friends for their advice. Or just ask questions on here - there are plenty of 365'ers whose mother tongue is Photoshop. ;)

@jannaellen So far, I've just found videos by silly people who just rush thru and don't explain stuff properly, but I'll search harder. searching on specific tasks is a good idea. Thanks!
@asrai For some reason, I didn't think of searching YT for Gimp tutes. Thanks! It's been sitting on my PC since you put me onto it back in April. It looks scary! :-O
@dieter Yep, I started shooting raw last month, and so far, the files have just been siting on my hard drive, while I'm still processing my jpegs using picnik.com!
@jasehoad Thanks for the LR link. Checking out now....
@dieter I started playing in LR last week. Couldn't find an "undo" button for the life of me, got the shits and haven't opened it since. Also was frustrated by some YT vids by folks who have clearly never explained anything useful in their lives and they weren't about to start now! I guess you just have to sort thru the chaff to find the good stuff!
@dieter Yeah, I found that, but I couldn't find the "undo last change, but keep everything else so you don't have to bloody start all over again" button..?? @jasehoad Right you are! Many thanks!
@beautifulthing I thought they looked a little saggy in this pic (someone burned my bra for me before I was born apparently!) but thanks for the vote of confidence!! :-)
@beautifulthing Oh, I loves ya BTW, but can we still have that catfight in @sdpace's living room, cause would be totes epic!! (HA! You didn't think to trademark THAT one, did ya!) ;-)
@jasehoad WHA...??!!! You gave me MAC instructions?? Bloody irresponsible, I say! I'm on a PC and might have driven myself insane trying to ctrl-z my way into undoingness like, forever!! It's lucky I have the kindly @dieter to look after me. I just may unfollow you now Jase...
@tabbycat first thing I wanted to do was to make adjustments to multiple images at the same time (e.g. colour balancing a whole batch). So here's a tip. If you select more than one image (ctrl-click or shift-click), click on the Sync button to edit them at the same time:
or, even better, hold down CTRL/CMD then click Sync... and the Sync button will change to Auto Sync. From then on every time you have multiple images selected changes will be applied to all of them:
To undo the last change, go to your develop tab, scroll down on the left menu until you see the list of your edits, and just click on the last one that you still liked. You can click on each of them in turn until you find the one from where you want to continue. Since every single step is recorded, you can go to any point in your processing.
But seriously, was going to respond not long after you posted last night, but ended up in hospital and have only just got home. (Possible nudity in theatre gowns, etc. and new selfies to be posted shortly, not with post it notes but instead 3M Red Dots).
BTW I first used GIMP about 5 years ago but found it awkward on Mac because it was programmed in X11. I find it easier to use Aperture and Pixelmator. These are both relatively inexpensive to download for Mac from App Store and relatively easy to use. Have similar characteristics to Adobe Programs.
@peterdegraaff Ha ha! LOVE it!! Total awesomeness!! :-)
I hope you get out of their clutches soon. Hospitals are nasty places. Some people even die in there, apparently! :-O

As for Gimp, I just leave mind manacled in the basement ;)
P.S Slightly disappointed by the lack of nudity

Thread FAIL.
iTunes U. also has a wealth of information and classes and such on all things Photoshop. And it is free.
How do you know? Everyone could be sitting around typing au natural.
@webfoot Pics or it didn't happen - that's my rule. :)

One boob pic just for @jasehoad @paintedpilgrim and @beautifulthing
Aside from my more recent one, that's about all I got for now!
@tabbycat I can't wait until the thread where we get to share our favorite fave for the week because BAM. Your bewbs. They is it.
@photographyfascists Yes, yes I know that was highly inappropriate

as Jase says, ctrl-Z to undo
(and here, more sensibly, under Develop)
@jasehoad Right you are! Many thanks!

or ctrl-Z (cmd-Z on the mac)

And anymore of this unfollow talk I might have to go join the "Bokeh" thread club
Nah, don't bother! I heard it's full of dreadfully misplaced "Bouquets"...!!
