30th May 2014

After the sad departure of Milford earlier this week, his cage has seemed very empty. It might seem strange that such a small creature became part of our family but Milford was a character.

I thought we could just visit the local pet and aquatic centre at Squires garden centre (and check on card supplies at the same time). I was looking for a male hamster (thy are meant to be easier to get used to being handled) and possibly a long haired one. Benjamin the friendly assistant showed me a number of hamsters but it wasn’t until the last one that we found our new ‘baby’.

So here is ‘Brockley’ in his carry case just before I introduced him to his cage. He is a long haired Sable 'banded' Syrian hamster. His head is a dark grey, he has a white band round his middle and his rear end is a paler grey - he has little pale spectacles as well. His name comes from the old English name for a badger which is ‘Brock’.

‘Hello everyone’ from Brockley!
A darling little beastie! He looks so friendly and sweet! I don't know much about hamsters as pets! Do they run around the house?

@maggiemae He lives in a massive cage that I ordered a few years ago from Germany (cost £60!!). They come out and have wander when I am with them on the sofa etc. Milford was so friendly he sat for 20 minutes on my shoulder watching television!! When they want a proper run I put them in a special hamster ball so they can go where they want in the house but I won't lose them. However… there have been a number of occasions when they have escaped from the ball and its taken me hours to coax them out from behind furniture. Their stomachs always overrule their brains though and so a plate of treats will always persuade them out eventually!!

Hello Brockley from Stephanie and Tristan! You will have a very good life with Emma and Colin. And Emma will sometimes take lovely pictures of you, like this one which is soft (like you Brockley) and has great pov and composition. This picture of you is a fav for me!
