Next stage of my planned itinerary was to visit one of the nearby islands to Split and so today we headed back to the incredibly disorganised ferry port and bought tickets for a catamaran trip to Hvar.
After queueing yet again we headed briskly to the dock where the boat was departing and got very good seats. The ferry journey would have been well over 2 hours but the catamaran can do the same journey in under half the time. I had taken a sea sickness tablet as I am very bad at travelling by boat but in the event the crossing was pretty smooth.
Hvar is a very attractive town, similar to Split but much less busy and full on. There is definitely a Venetian feel to the architecture. There were much more tasteful shops and less tat than in the centre of Split! First port of call, a decent iced coffee and then we explored the town. We walked all the way top to the castle overlooking the town for great views and then back down through the beautifully laid out gardens.
Colin found a little restaurant where we shared a seafood risotto, again very good. Our return catamaran was not until 6pm so we whiled away the time by enjoying an ice cream and sitting in the shade. The journey back was just as smooth and as we were still full from lunch we pulled together a snack from the left overs in the fridge before packing as much as we could and putting the cases in the car for our early start tomorrow for stage four of our trip to the island of Korçula. Colin managed to turn the car around with Ivica’s help by reversing into the traffic - good one!
