16th September 2021

1 year, 172 days since the start of the 1st lock down in March 2020

I relapsed again a bit this morning although I didn’t feel as bad as Tuesday. I’m taking Colin’s dizziness tablets each morning but having to ration them as there are only a week or so left - we are going to try seeing if we can get more in a local pharmacy.

We decided to walk up to the castle today. It was lovely - just below were beautiful gardens with cool shaded seats and a little fountain. I met a nice couple from Holland and we discussed the pandemic issues in the U.K. and how badly we are doing compared to other countries. Colin had forgotten his phone so I had a pleasant half hour or so resting in the gardens. Once he had returned we headed into the castle - great value at only three euros each for the castle and the museum. It is such a photogenic place and we spent some time down in the huge brick cistern watching bats fly back and forth. We also saw a swallowtail butterfly and birds of prey - probably eagles circling in the distance.

We came out for lunch and found one of the few places actually open - a juice bar where I had a lovely fresh juice and a hummus and cheese toastie. Then we headed back to the museum by the castle in an old deconsecrated church. It wasn’t very large but was quite interesting and an eclectic mix.

On the way back we found that the only pharmacy had obviously closed months ago so we’ll have to wait until Evora to try and get some more tablets. I also popped into the post office to buy some stamps which has become a bit of a ritual when we are away! We stopped at a lovely little craft shop and bought some earring and some olive oil as it is so delicious in the area. I did investigate another restaurant but to be honest the menu was not that different from the place we had eaten last night so we decided to brave it and take the car out to Pingo Doce again!

The journey out of the town through the narrow streets did not seem quite as bad as on our way in... then Google maps on my phone decided to take a shortcut! Oh dear. The road got narrower and narrower until it was just the width of the car and cobbled. colon did very well, even when the local bus headed straight for us - we took the easier route back. More prawns and lovely food and a novelty of a supermarket that is fully stocked.
