24th September 2021

1 year, 180 days since the start of the 1st lock down in March 2020.

There seems to be a theme that the first night in a new locations is always noisy - although that was not the case for Marvão. Last night there was continued shouting for over an hour between what sounds like a young guy splitting up with his girlfriend and another friend chipping in. The trouble with these little town and with our time in Evora is that the streets are narrow, cobbled with little vegetation so sound is not absorbed and can only rise and reverberate.

We didn’t hang around but headed out for the pharmacy that we had visited yesterday to reorganise our lateral flow tests required for our return journey. We arrived bang on time and the staff on duty were lovely even though the process was thorough and very uncomfortable. We walked out half an hour later with two negative test certificates - great. We stopped at the central cafe for a celebratory pancake afterwards.

We headed up to the castle which was impressive although not as pretty or well preserved as my favourite in Marvâo. We popped back to the house and I managed to get the key to work (think I’ve mastered the knack now) so I could pop out and buy a few pressies to take home.

I had a constructive trip as not only did I get presents, I also located the small supermarket which had clearly taken the position of our beloved Pingo Doce! Not as good but still had plenty of fresh fruit and milk for our breakfast. On my way back to the house I took a different route around the city walls and past the little car park by the town hall and think I have found a better place to park and it should still be possible to drive to the end of our ‘Rua’ to pack our luggage. Later in the afternoon we both waked out for Colin to view my prospective parking route and we found the old steps down to the river and walked under the original Roman bridge ruins.

Another very good meal at ‘Tamuje’ restaurant and this evening we had a table on the private balcony which was lovely.
