Holy Rosary Institute

Lafayette, Louisiana

Formerly a Catholic school for African American students, Holy Rosary closed in 1993. This building was completed in 1914. There are plans to restore it: http://www.restoreholyrosary.com/our_dream.

The building is posted (supposedly the floors have collapsed) but the grounds are open. I was busily taking photos when a police car pulled up. I was a little nervous, but the police woman assured me I could take all the exterior pictures I wanted. She often pulls into the lot to do paperwork under the pecan trees, thinking the presence of a police car helps discourage vandalism.

Perhaps your first urbex experience? Nice capture Diane!

A very interesting history, and a nice story about the police providing proper security. Picture is very nice, too.

How beautiful this is ...l love the pov! You are definitely a Master of composition, Diane. That cross is so beautiful and hope that it all gets restored. I also worry about the police sometimes when taking photos ... I never know if anyone will be offended or if I am "trespassing."

Perhaps this photo answers my previous question. The porch and stairs look pretty worn. Other than that, it looks in good shape.
