"Those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it." --George Santayana
Another painting by ChemiS commemorating racial violence in Baton Rouge in 1970's. This was before we moved here, and it's difficult to find information about it.
Good quote to accompany that stirring image, Diane. I wonder if people who celebrate such events inn such a dramatic manner realize that they are storing not only regret for the past but hatred for the future. I suspect that some do, and have no wish to forget ... and certainly not forgive. My problem is that without knowledge of the full facts I don't know which "side" I am expected to support, and could rush into judgement which might make any solution impossible.
@wordpixman Thanks for your thoughtful comments, Arthur. Fifty years later, we don't know exactly what happened, but many people are still so resentful of the police that they will not cooperate with their investigations. Hence, our city has one of the highest murder rates in the U.S. This particular mural has received very little publicity, so apparently other people don't know how to react. As we are raising a teenaged granddaughter, it gave us a great opportunity for discussion!
No one looks happy in this picture which pretty much covers it all. I'm glad it gave you opportunity to talk about it though- that is a good thing that came out of something that appears to be quite bad.
