Some graffiti in Old South Baton Rouge has been calling my name for weeks. Today I took a break from cleaning/renovating/packing to find some of them. I was moved almost to tears (again). Many tell of Baton Rouge's complicated history of racial segregation and poverty. More to follow.
A nonprofit group is bringing talented, well-known graffiti artists to Baton Rouge to paint on abandoned buildings. I'm learning a lot about the artists. From his website:
"Graffiti writer known as Chemis comes from Kazakhstan. His works are known around the world. Visiting new places, experimenting with spraycan, making films and cooperation with organizations promoting human rights is an important part of his ten-year history of painting."
@ithinkithunk Thanks so much for the fav and your continued support. Before I move away from Baton Rouge, I'm going to make a list or map of where these installations are and I'll share it with you. This is right across the street from the Carver branch of the public library, so there was no problem parking. The organization sponsoring them has a FB page, The Museum of Public Art, and they'll tell you the locations if you ask.
BTW, the wedding flowers I photographed earlier this month were roses and hydrangeas, as you thought, but they also had a few lilies and something else mixed in. My daughter and I thought they were the most beautiful wedding flowers we'd seen in ages, so we asked who the florist was. They only knew that it was a New Orleans florist, as the groom's family is from there.
@eudora Thanks! That would be great for whenever I finally have a week back in Louisiana to explore! I found the group on FB too so I'll be keeping an eye out for things they post!
That's cool. I was curious because I'm thinking of using hydrangeas at my wedding. I need to call the flower lady though... :)
Well, it's been a while since this was posted so I imagine you are either on your way or almost ready to leave. This is a beautiful mural and the project sounds like a very worthy cause.
