From the pulpit

A loosely secured, apparently abandoned church near Lumpkin, Georgia. I found it disconcerting that the Bible was in tatters. . . .

I don't know whether to be sad that it was left abandoned there (as if no longer needed or cared for) or happy that it was used so much that it fell apart. Actually it is quite sad that the church was abandoned. It looks like a really old one with the two entry ways- back in the day it was one for the ladies and the other for the gents. fav

@olivetreeann Thanks for your comments and fav. I wondered about the double doors, which were in front and back--I thought that was more like a Quaker meeting house? The church is the Providence United Methodist Church. According to a historical marker, the congregation was organized in 1832-33 and this building constructed in 1859. The exterior of the building was in good shape, the interior not bad, like maybe a small congregation was trying to hold things together. The tattered Bible seemed a disconnect, like it should have been stored somewhere safer.

@eudora I think this form is generally associated with the Quakers but a lot of churches from this era had the same design. I went to college in W. Va. and the town's first church (which was no longer in use but being restored) had the same set-up. I think it was built in the late 1700's early 1800's. The college was founded in 1840.
