The Huey P. Long-O.K. Allen bridge over the Mississippi River used to look rusty, supposedly because of dust from an aluminum plant nearby. I was never too sure about that explanation.
@grammyn@margonaut The bridge LOOKED rusty for years, but they claimed it was dust from the aluminum plant. Aluminum dust is red and sticks to everything. Regardless, I hate to drive over it, because the lanes are about 6 inches wider than a car!
I believe I've actually avoided that particular bridge before! Looks like you can see through the deck, absolute worst thing ever. I accidentally drove over one somewhere on the east coast (was on the approach before I realized it) and went about 100 miles out of the way not to return over it.
