There are two historic Catholic churches across the street from each other in New Orleans. St. Alphonsus (1857) served the Irish community, while St. Mary's Assumption (1860) had a German congregation. A third church, Bon Secours, no longer standing, was for the French. St. Alphonsus is closed, but St. Mary's is still active. Some of the former school buildings have been converted into apartments for seniors and homeless people.
