We have these water beetles make lay-overs in our water troughs all the time.
The original one disappeared the day I took his/her picture, but I now have two much smaller ones that replaced it.
This is what it looks like when it is not clinging to the side of the trough - which is what they do a lot of.
It has quite a nice colourful body but oh my gosh, I read your link...."toebiters" and they are fearsome enough to catch and kill frogs and snakes? UGH... vicious little things aren't they? Do they nip at the sheep and the cows when they come to drink out of the troughs?
