Apple Hill was once a bustling town beside the railway tracks. It had sidewalks, a train station that with daily stops, schools, churches, stores, and this hotel
The churches remain with active congregations but everything else has closed.
There was a ton of power lines and poles that I had to remove because they were absolutely so distracting. My camera club was impressed with how well I had done!

Glengarry County - like much of rural Canada - has been slowly declining for over 50 years. Services, and the jobs that go with them, have been moving to larger centres. So these small towns remain with older residents who have lived their whole lives there. But thankfully young families do see the value of raising children in a small community and buy the more affordable housing available. So - they will commute up to an hour each way to go work in either Ottawa or Montreal.

There are still people who live here but it is not as vibrant as it used to be.The businesses have now closed. Part of the reason that the businesses close in these old towns is because of transportation and farming.
They originally served a huge farming community that surrounded them. Farms were smaller and there were more families farming.
They needed a town close by since it took a long time to get there.
But - as farming got more mechanized and transportation became easier, those small businesses could not compete with the larger ones in bigger towns so they were forced to close.Small one room country schools closed when school buses became normal. And so it goes ...
And we call it progress.
