Wow Harry & I love that photo but just wondering about the timing. I thought it would be cold in Ontario right now. Is this the usual time of year to harvest corn or perhaps this todays photo but we like it! Fave.
@happypat
This is the normal time to harvest corn ... anywhere from mid-November straight through to the New Year and beyond. They will even harvest corn when there is snow in the field as long as the snow is not deeper than the corn cobs.
Farmers would rather let the corn dry on the cob in the field than pay for the propane to dry corn in the bins so they will let it stay in the field.
I have even seen the the occasional time when deep snow catches the farmer by surprise and the snow stays for the rest of the winter so the corn does not get harvested until spring.
That is a real challenge because we get a lot of rain in the spring, and farmers cannot get onto the field when it is that wet. The corn has a tendency to fall down in those conditions as well.
Not pretty when deep snow arrives early!
We used to say when a bit of frost gets on it it’s better but mostly we harvest maize about October depending on the need for feed & if it’s wet on the land. We don’t get that much snow like you do so it would be a real unusual thing to harvest in that! Thanks for the info. @farmreporter
Yes - I quite often notice how your schedule is the exact opposite of ours.
It shows the circle of life so vividly!
