The doorway to St Nicholas Church, Barfreston, Kent - listed on the internet as one of the hidden gems of Norman architecture in Kent, and possibly in the whole of England.
The village of Barfreston was a stopover place for pilgrims on their way to Canterbury to see the shrine of St Thomas a Becket.
The church was probably founded in the late 11th century by Hugo de Port, a Norman knight. The building was remodelled about 1180 with the addition of the detailed stone carvings (over 100) seen today.
I wonder if the stone carvers could have even imagined that we would be in awe of their work 800 years later! So many eyes have admired this through the years.
Such beautiful architecture and wrought iron work, I live in Kent and I've never heard of Barfreston - off to put this on my list of places to visit! :)
@bigmxx Thank you! You will love it Michelle, so much history. Very small church. Parking nearby is not easy at all, but it's worth a short walk. Whereabouts in Kent are you?
