For the Flash of Red February theme, this week with the emphasis on contrast.
This is one of the Folkestone artworks along the promenade by Mermaid Beach. The artist is Bill Woodrow.
"The sculpture's architectural base sitting on a black puddle shape (not visible in this shot) refers to the exploitation of fossil fuels for the development of the modern world. The figures of an Inuit and his or her ecological counterpart, the seal, represent an ancient way of life, standing on thin ice. Sited by the shore, the strong horizontals suggest the rising water level resulting from the disappearing polar ice caps, an iceberg melting into a pool of oil. Climate change, and its effect on people who are on the edge of change, has been a preoccupation of the artist for many years."
Taken with an infra red camera and processed in Silver Efex. The complete sculpture can be seen in my Miscellany album.
