Taken from the newly renovated pier yesterday, a pano of Dover Castle sitting on top of the White Cliffs overlooking the Channel. I had wanted to get more of the cliffs into this but my poor computer kept having a meltdown at the amount of work I was asking it to do so I gave up in the end. I originally was intending to show the colour version, but I preferred the b&w so here it is.
Castle history: The site dates back to the Iron Age and has a Roman lighthouse and an Anglo-Saxon church. William the Conqueror took control of the castle when he landed in England and it was garrisoned without interrruption until 1958. Henry II added much of the defences including the keep which was built between 1170 and 1180.
Great pano. It’s such a shame the planners didn’t think more carefully before allowing such horrible apartment blocks to be built below such an historic site.
What an incredible summary of the remarkable range of buildings at this spot!! The ancient castle and fortifications, the terrace houses with their chimneys and the modern unit blocks on the waterfront - all shown in wonderful detail. Stunning combination. :)
great b/w
