Our main reason for going to Blackpool* was to go up the tower and to see the Illuminations. This little seaside town was celebrating 100 years of lights which effectively extend its season by a couple of months when other resorts are closing down for the winter. Over 100 miles of lights strung up over a six-mile stretch of the seafront and attracting millions of visitors every year.
The Blackpool tower is very like the Eiffel tower, but only half the size. The town's mayor visited the Grand Exhibition in Paris in 1889 and decided that Blackpool needed its own tower, so had one built!
In this photo you can see the edge of the top of the tower (painted red, not a dalek), plus two of the town's three piers, along with chocablock traffic crawling along. We took a tram! Along the top are the lights of Southport further along the coast. It felt a bit frustrating to not be able to get all the glory in one photo, which I suppose is the difference between what your eye takes in and what is actually in one small rectangle.
*And the opportunity for some seaside pics of course, but don't tell the kids...
