Happy Easter! by fishers

Happy Easter!

Many eastern churches celebrate festivals at different times to those in the UK, with Easter this year falling a month later than the date used in western churches. My dad is Ukrainian, so we have the benefit of celebrating Easter again this weekend.

There are many traditions in the Ukrainian church associated with Easter, and my shot today illustrates a food one.

Paska and Pysanky are the two main traditional foods to celebrate the Ukrainian Easter. Paska is a rich bread made with butter, eggs and milk. Pysanky are eggs decorated using a batik method of wax and dyes. These are packed into a basket with other traditional foods and taken to church for a special blessing on Easter Saturday, ready to be eaten on Easter Sunday.

Most of the eggs in this shot are traditional painted eggs, but there is a modern one (the yellow one) which shows how the craft has been reinterpreted using a different technique.

@monkeykid @bruni Thank you. The Eastern Orthodox churches use the old Julian calender to work out their Christian festivals so I get two of everything including Christmas! Sorry to be late replying, I was celebrating with family in Sheffield.
