Windsor Castle and St George's Chapel

This is a picture taken from the Lower Ward of Windsor Castle, looking toward the Round Tower, which is at the center of the picture. The flag flying is the Royal Standard, which shows that the queen is in residence.

Windsor Castle was founded by William the Conquueror at the end of the eleventh century. Since this time it has been home to 39 monarchs, and is the oldest royal residence in the British Isles. It is one of the official residences of the present Queen, Elizabeth II. It is often used for events in support of organisations, of which the royals are patrons.

In 1992 a fire broke out in Queen Victoria's private chapel which caused a lot of damage, including to St Georges Hall and the Grand Reception Room. It took 200 firefighters 15 hours to bring the fire under control. The Repair and restoration of the damaged part of the castle started almost immediately after the fire and was completed by November 1997.

The Castle grounds is also home to St Georges Chapel, seen on the left hand side of this picture. Work on the Chapel started in 1475 and it was completed in 1484. It is the spiritural home of the Order of the Garter and the site of a number of royal tombs and memorials.
