First World War Machine Gunner by fishers

First World War Machine Gunner

A change of location for me today, as I've travelled across to Lancaster to spend a few days with Lucy.

Since today was rather dull, with rain showers, we went on a visit to two of Lancaster's excellent museums, the maritime museum and the city museum. I featured the maritime museum in my solo project last year, so here is a shot from the city museum.

Part of the museum contains the regimental museum for the The King's Own Royal Regiment. This shot shows a manikin of a first world war machine gunner, which seemed an appropriate image to include, with all the recent discussion about how the centenary of the start of the first world war should be commemorated next year.

Certainly it's important to remember the mass slaughter of World War I - perhaps we won't make a similar mistake again and become embroiled in another world war if we remember the horrors of the past.

I'm gonna have to visit these museums Ian.

I hope you are right that we won't be involved in another war. This is a dramatic image. Nicely taken.

Always important to remember the madness of wars. And the greasy reasons why they started . But mistakes made in the past is n`t a guarantee it won`t happen in the future . We have to work on it.

As always Ian, I love the background you give to your shots. Makes you appreciate them that much more

A most appropriate reminder of the carnage of WW1. The centenary of the ANZAC landing is a hot topic here.

@gamelee

Thank you Lee - I'm very impressed by the museums in Lancaster. We spent quite a bit of time in both museums,and the cafe in the maritime museum is very reasonable too!

@lyndag

Thank you Lynda - it was a fascinating museum, but sad to see all the battles that had been fought over the years.

@witchyjacq

Thank you Jacqui - I find the first world war particularly horrific, with the troops 'going over the top' and being cut to pieces. Hopefully a more peaceful future lies ahead.

@pyrrhula

Thank you Ferry, and I agree, we may not learn the lessons of the past, and we have to work on making the future peaceful. I hope we are successful!

@kaarina365

Thank you Karin, the displays were fascinating and in some ways quite depressing, but it was a very worthwhile way to use our time.
