I wanted to have a trip out yesterday, so after some thought I decided to visit Selby, which is some 15 miles south of York, beside the River Ouse. It's a town with a long history, which goes back to at least Viking times. It is the site of an impressive abbey built of limestone and which looked lovely in the afternoon sun.
It's a town that I've passed through many times, but it's quite a few years since my last visit, and much has changed.
One of the changes is a small but attractive riverside park, with a sculpture that nicely summarises the history of the town.
The centre shot shows the complete sculpture of four figures holding up a boat. The four figures are (from top left going clockwise) a monk, a boatman, a coal miner and a miller, with each figure holding an object which reflects what they are.
The monk represents the abbey and it's 900 year history. The boatman reflects Selby's history as a port and transport centre, where shipbuilding was once important. The coal miner reflects the most recent major industry of the area. The miller reflects the importance of farming in the area, and Selby's role as a milling centre.
Thank you Tony, glad you enjoyed it - I have a list of other local towns and villages that I would like to visit over the summer, so there should be more days out soon.
Thank you Molly - I'd almost forgotten about Selby too, but it was a very interesting place to visit. These photos gave me chance to experiment with creating collages in Picasa too!
