Sometimes known as Guy Fawkes Night, though he had nothing to celebrate!
Guy Fawkes was born and educated in York at St Peter's School. He achieved fame by failing to blow up the King and Parliament in the Gunpowder plot of 1605.
Although one of a number of conspirators who tried to kill King James 1, he was caught guarding the gunpowder in the early hours of 5th November. Bonfires were lit that evening to celebrate the survival of King James and this became an annual tradition still practised. Fireworks entered the celebrations as a reminder of the gunpowder.
Guy and his fellow conspirators paid the penalty for treason, by being hung, drawn and quartered.
Traditionally the bonfire has a Guy on top - except at St Peter's School, York, where, it is felt to be bad form to burn an old boy of the school!
@pyrrhula Thank you for the fav, I'm really happy as it was my first attempt at taking firework pictures. I usually just watch the display and let everyone else use their cameras. Katharine
