To fend off the post-Christmas slump, I headed out with my camera to snap the Place de la République - Paris' largest public square. Interestingly, the square and the roads leading off it were only designed after the Revolution to stop uprisings from taking place in the small streets near this area. It has this monument in the middle of it which depicts various points in the Revolution and the creation of the French state.
The main figure is Marianne - the symbol of the French Revolution who is supposed to symbolise every common Frenchman. Around the pedestal are another three Marianne's depicting 'liberté, égalité, fraternité' (freedom, equality and brotherhood). The middle shot on the right is the fraternité Marianne.
Then there are 12 bas-reliefs which depict important events in the creation of the French republic. The top shot is 4th August 1879, when feudalism was abolished. The bottom shot is 4th Sept 1870, when the Third Republic was declared. - Lucy
