East Tower, Prudhoe Castle by fishers

East Tower, Prudhoe Castle

Technically this is the East Tower of the castle, however when we spotted it Ian and I simultaneously said 'Granny Flat'. She would have to be agile or able to fly as the stairs leading up to it are somewhat challenging.

The tower was built in the mid fourteenth century and included the steps seen. The point at which they are decayed indicates the level of the nineteenth century garden. The new stone facing is thought to date from about 1810.

A young couple rented the tower in the 1950's and the manor house was divided into flats. Facilities must have been spartan as there was no electricity or running water, but the views must have made up for their lack.

Amazing to think of someone living there as late as the 1950s! As you say, it can't have been easy climbing up those steps! I really like the way you've chosen to show this 'slice' of the castle.

@dolphin Thank you Molly. I suppose there was a lack of accommodation in the 1950's that made this a possible home. Katharine
