I had to dive into the archives for this shot of the original ice cream boat in York. This shot was taken in 2013, so must have been quite soon after it first began selling ice cream. The shot was taken from the Millennium footbridge south of the city centre, and looking across the River Ouse.
This was the idea of a local businessman, and combined an old barge that worked on the canal at Hebden Bridge in Calderdale, West Yorkshire. The ice cream van was originally used to serve tourists at Robin Hoods Bay on the North Yorkshire coast near Whitby. So the old ice cream van was mounted on the barge and a new business launched!
An internet search suggests that this ice cream barge is still in use at the same location near the Millennium bridge.
Ah brilliant fun! ONe of the highlights when my hubby took the Young Fella sailing in the Solent was the appearance of the ice cream boat. You wave them over to your yacht and buy while still at sea! Wonderful things
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
I don't know if both ice cream boats are owned by the same person, though I suspect they are, but it is interesting that such a successful idea hasn't been more widely copied at other riverside tourist locations. The only other person who commented who knew of one is Casablanca, with one on the Solent.

Ha Ha - perhaps I should have left the sentence incomplete and let everyone to use their imagination for the rest!

I agree - I'm just surprised to see two of them in York when I've never seen one anywhere else!

Thank you Vesna - I hadn't seen an ice cream boat before I found this one in York.
