On the roof of a pub in Brixton, London, is this Heron weather vane. There's divided opinion as to why it's a heron. One theory goes that it's to celebrate Brixton's history and the herons that were attracted to the River Effra. Another similar idea is that Herne Hill, (which is bordered by Brixton, Denmark Hill, Dulwich, Loughborough Junction and Tulse Hill) could have originally been called Heron Hill thanks to the herons attracted to the River Effra.
All in all, no one really knows what it's doing here, but the weather vane does cheer up the skyline somewhat! It has, however, ruffled a few feathers in the online world as it emerged that it cost £30,000 to put up there.
