If there's a building that is impossible to photograph without a car in front but with the light in the right direction, it's this one in York! Just beyond Bootham Bar (which featured in my shot on Thursday) is this bright white building - the De Grey Rooms.
This is an example of early Victorian architecture, and the rooms were designed by George Townsend Andrews - famous for his work on George Hudson's railway buildings.
The rooms were originally used as an officer's mess for the Yorkshire Hussars Regiment. They took their name from Thomas Philip de Grey, colonel-commandant of this regiment.
Over their long history, they've been used for many events, particularly for holding balls and dances. At one time the tourist information centre was housed in there. Currently, the theatre next door lease the rooms as a rehearsal space.
@julzmaioro@seattlite@thresheg@bkbinthecity@lhart@pyrrhula@ivan@juliac@vignouse@dolphin@bruni@ceilidh Thank you all. I was going to hang around to get an uninterrupted view, but actually there is always a lane of traffic on a green light in front of the building so you never get a clear shot when the light's good! So frustrating! And as two buses and a fire engine were coming, I thought I'd take my chances with this! Haha! - Lucy
love reading about the history of this building, always interesting.
