Located on the Upper Richmond Road, beside the junction with Rocks Lane and close to Barnes railway station, this old milestone was another interesting London discovery made last weekend.
The stone, with its pyramidal cap, dates back to the late 18 century and is inscribed with directions on all four sides. The inscription on the visible side reads "V miles 3 quarters from Hyde" (Park Corner).
This was the first of two old milestones that we saw on our walk on Barnes Common. It is a grade 2 listed structure. Interestingly, the other one that we saw was in rather better condition than this one but is not a listed structure.
Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.
These stones in the area around Barnes Common would have been installed when this part of London was largely rural. They will have witnessed remarkable changes since they were installed around 250 years ago.

I think the story of these old mileposts is quite fascinating!
