Helmsley Castle, from the Cleveland Way by fishers

Helmsley Castle, from the Cleveland Way

Helmsley is the start (or end) of a long distance footpath that runs along the western, northern and eastern edges of the Moors before finishing (or starting) in Filey. It is a magnificent walk with some lovely landscapes along the route, which stretches for 109 miles.

After our visit to the castle, Katharine and I set out to walk the first three miles, as far as Rievaulx abbey, where we would visit the abbey tea rooms before exploring the village to take photos of the attractive stone cottages.

The path rises gently from the start in Helmsley, and soon there is this view back to Helmsley castle. From here the castle still looks quite intact, and gives a great impression of how the castle would have appeared before the Civil War.

The damage to the east tower is quite well hidden from this direction. The west range (on the right), is now used as a museum, with a fascinating display of the history of the site and of the Civil War. The west range has recently had its roof repaired, and the upstairs rooms of the museum are open again after quite a long period of closure.

Thank you all for your lovely comments and favs, they are very much appreciated.

There are quite a few interesting heritage sites in the area around Helmsley. There is the castle, the abbey at Rievaulx, another abbey at Byland, and to the east of Helmsley a Roman villa, though that is not normally open to the public. A little further east are the Roman camps near Cropton and the castle at Pickering.
