The other side of the bridge...

As promised, here is the other side of Tadcaster Bridge, and what a contrast. Severe flooding at the end of 2015 caused widespread problems across Yorkshire and in other parts of the country. Here in Tadcaster the River Wharfe not only flooded parts of the town centre but also led to the colapse of the north side of this bridge.

The bridge itself is actually two bridges joined side by side. The original part was built around 1700, with the widening being done in 1792. It is possible to see the join under the arch at the centre of this shot.

At the moment under water surveys are being carried out and two large and deep cavities have so far been found in the river bed. These have to be filled and stabalised before repair work can take place.

It is estimated that it could take a year until repairs are completed, and the cost could be £3million.

Such a shame that such a lovely bridge was so badly damaged. Everyone in the town will be relieved when the work is finally completed. Great shot of the work in progress.

The £3million , it`s only money. and you get a nice historical bridge in return. That`s prohibitive.

Good to see both sides of the story! It was staggering to see it collapse on TV but good that the rebuilding has begun whatever the cost!

Thank you all for your kind thoughts, comments and fav's, they are a great encouragement.

As for the bridge, the intention is to repair it in the same style as it was, but with wider footpaths for pedestrians to use.
