The chance of a day out walking in Wharfedale yesterday was too good to miss, so it was off to Bolton Bridge on a Dalesbus bus. About a mile north of Bolton Bridge lies Bolton Abbey - a village, a church, priory ruins and a hall all bear the same name.
Bolton Abbey Hall was originally the gatehouse of the priory, and was later converted into a house by the Cavendish family. The Cavendish family has been one of the richest and most influential aristocratic families in England since the 16th century, and are still landowners on a grand scale today. Many miles of countryside in Wharfedale are owned by them, and they provide good facilities for all visitors, and not just walkers.
It's a long time since I visited this part of Wharfedale, and it was really good to be there again. A beautiful riverside trail along well maintained paths made walking a real pleasure, and with so much of interest to see along the way. It probably won't be long before I'm back to Wharfedale again!
Thank you all for your lovely comments. This is a beautiful place to visit, and there were many other people there on Saturday. Fortunately, most people don't stray too far from the tea rooms, so it isn't too hard to find relatively quiet places to enjoy.
