Bradford Cathedral by fishers

Bradford Cathedral

In the heart of the city of Bradford is this interesting church. The origins of the church here go back around 1300 years, when there would have been a wooden church here, with a carved stone cross outside it. A fragment of that cross can still be seen built into one of the internal walls of the current church.

The first stone church had been built by 1327AD, but that was the year it was burnt by raiders, probably from Scotland.

The oldest parts of the existing building, the nave arcades were completed by 1458, and the tower was completed by 1508. Over the centuries there have been many changes, with the last major work taking place in the early 1960s, when parts of the building on the left of this shot were constructed.

Much more detail of the history of this building can be found at http://www.bradfordcathedral.org/the-building/history/

Sadly, by the time I got to the cathedral, the weather had deteriorated and it had become a rather grey day, so this shot doesn't do justice to the lovely yellow stone used in this building, and in many other older buildings around the city centre

Thank you for your comments and favs - they are a great encouragement!

This cathedral was probably one of the most welcoming that I've ever been in. The volunteers in here were very friendly and helpful and were more than happy to spend time in conversation. Well done them.
