Railway Roundhouse by fishers

Railway Roundhouse

Back across to the eastern side of England for today's shot, and to the city of Leeds. I've seen these buildings many times as I've passed on the train, but it isn't easy to get a shot from there, so I took the opportunity to go and have a closer look. The building on the right is a roundhouse, built in 1847 by the Leeds and Thirsk Railway Company to house 20 locomotives. The building on the left is a half rounhouse built slightly later as a locomotive maintenance facility.

Beyond these buildings are some of the modern apartment blocks and offices closer to the city centre.

The roundhouse buildings were used for railway purposes until 1904. Surprisingly they have survived, the roundhouse being used by Leeds Commercial Truck and Van Hire, and the half roundhouse by Majestic Wine Merchants. Both buildings are rare survivals from the early days of railways.

Thank you for your comments and fav, it is encouraging to hear from you.

I'm quite intrigued by these buildings. Apparently the roundhouse has been open to visitors during the annual heritage weekend in September, when historic buildings not normally open to the public are opened - I will have to keep an eye on that!
